I’m Liam, I am an NYU student studying web development and I love creative coding and A/V art :)
School for poetic computation has been on my radar as the “cooler” version of my major at NYU. Every class I have seen brings a super unique and interesting combination of art and technology that never failed to wow me. I decided to take this course as I had really been wanting to get involved with SFPC, and cellular automata has always been something fascinating to me. After this I am going to graduate so who knows what will happen. Hopefully I will get a web development job. :)
I wish I would’ve had more time to work on my projects. This semester I have been pushing myself to do more things, which has been great for feeling fulfilled but has made myself a lot busier and less able to focus on creating great projects. A specific thing I would have wanted to do was revise my risograph print to be animated in a way that makes more sense for cellular automata.
I would like to do more p5js coding, and risograph printing. I tried to combine the two using the riso p5 library, which didn’t work out the way I quite wanted it to. But I think just focusing on them on their own would have been really fun to experiment with. Coding out the rules was very interesting and made experimenting super easy and fun, while the physicality of the riso printing was very creatively satisfying and turned out amazing.
Best:
The lecture on geomancy and cellular computing was super interesting and doing the geomancy activity was very fun. It opened my eyes to different ways “cellular automata” could be interpreted.
Worst:
Not being able to bring my final homework to the level of completion that I wanted it to be.
Lost:
Trying to interpret how the cellular computer worked - it was super cool and interesting - but I could not understand whatsoever how it worked or what it was doing.\nCreative:
Using splatycode to create all sorts of weird interactions that used color as different objects, like trees that grew or a rainbow that generated.
I have made a connection with the larger creative coding / art as math community. My major in school is very intertwined with this, but it feels like quite a bubble at times. It has been amazing to see everyone in this class with their unique experiences and backgrounds who share a passion for the topic.
Glinn’s line drawing of the CA was really cool and I loved the organic look
All of the people knitting and crocheting was awesome to see
